Slack etiquette

Use the right channels, not DMs

  • Avoid DMing people for client updates and questions.
  • Use the external client channel for client-facing messages
  • Use the internal client channel for messages meant only for the internal team
  • This keeps everyone aligned and prevents information from being siloed. You can also generally expect faster response times.
  • If a client DMs you, politely ask if you can respond in the shared channel for visibility.
  • Avoid large group DMs.

Mentions

  • Use @here or @channel sparingly, only when you need messages to be seen by everyone in the channel.

Threads

  • Use threads to keep the channel cleaner and more readable.

Status

  • Set statuses to let people know when you're sick, busy, on vacation, etc. You can set your status through your Slack profile.
